There is an important piece of legislation in the Hawaiian State House: HB 697, the Safe Child Act, is sponsored by Vice Speaker Mizuno [HB 697 analysis]. This bill is currently in the Human Services (HUS) and Judiciary (JDL) Committees. The Safe Child Act is the first comprehensive approach to child custody when there is evidence or reports of domestic violence or child abuse. It is based on current scientific research, is multi-disciplinary and trauma-informed [See also: ACEs Study, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)].
Most importantly, it is most likely to protect children who are largely unprotected now. We urge your support of this legislation.
Right now, there is no hearing scheduled, but, as individuals, you can use the information here to call or leave an email for your State House member or for Vice Speaker Mizuno (Phone 808-586-6050 or E-Mail: repmizuno@Capitol.hawaii.gov) to add your support for the bill.
As usual Hawaii is on the cutting edge of passing a human rights bill. This one protects our Keiki’s from abusive parents in custody battles. Once again, Hawaii has the opportunity to lead the way in establishing important, leading edge policy and practice—and save children’s lives and health in the bargain.
Please help in anyway to get this bill passed!
